For January 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day 6 Degrees of Separation Coach4aday Challenge”-today we dive into University of Florida Quarterbacks from STEVE SPURRIER to Tim Tebow.

Steve Spurrier, a legendary figure in college football, gained prominence as the quarterback for the University of Florida in the mid-1960s. Known for his exceptional passing skills and strategic prowess, Spurrier became the first Heisman Trophy winner in the history of Florida Gators football in 1966.

Spurrier’s achievements as a quarterback at Florida set the stage for his illustrious career as both a player and a highly successful coach in the realm of college football. It also began over a period of time interesting individuals that would go on to play QB for the Gators.

Rules of the Challenge

Many people have heard of this concept. The notion of six degrees of separation grew out of work conducted by the social psychologist Stanley Milgram in the 1960s. It then became a 1993 film named appropriately “Six Degrees of Separation.”

Organizing a six degrees of separation challenge involves creating a chain of people, each connected to the next by a mutual acquaintance. The goal is to demonstrate that any two people in the world can be connected through a chain of six or fewer personal connections.

How to Participate

Here is how to participate:

  1. Identify the First and Last Person in the Chain.
  2. Go thru the connections with a brief explanation.
  3. Do this daily for 30 Days posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Day 21-Steve Spurrier to Tim Tebow

6 Degrees of Separation-Steve Spurrier-John Reaves-Kerwin Bell-Danny Wuerffel-Jesse Palmer-Tim Tebow

  1. Steve Spurrier in 1966 became the first QB in the history at the University of Florida to win the Heisman Trophy. Three years later Florida starting QB became John Reeves.
  2. John Reaves was the QB for the Gators 1969-1971. He became the all-time NCAA passing leader at the time many say thanks to the “Gator Flop“. Thirteen years later he would see Kerwin Bell become the QB for the Gators.
  3. Kerwin Bell was the Florida QB from 1984-1987. He was the SEC Player of the Year in 1984. He would later go on to be the Head Coach at Jacksonville and Valdosta State. Today he is the Head Coach at Western Carolina University. Six years after Kerwin Bell the Florida QB became Danny Wuerffel.
  4. Danny Wuerffel played QB from 1993-1996. In 1996 he became the 2nd QB from Florida to be awarded the Heisman Trophy. The Gators also won the National Championship that year. He would play in the NFL for 6 years. Two years later Jesse Palmer became the Florida QB
  5. Jesse Palmer did not have the on-field success that other QB had. He played at Florida from 1997-2000. He has gained notoriety as a television personality and ESPN broadcaster. 7 years after Jesse career ended at Florida Tim Tebow’s was beginning.
  6. Tim Tebow just might be one of the most fascinating people that sports has seen. He would seem to be in the news for not just what he did on the field but his views off it. He won the Heisman in 2007. He was a professional baseball and football player.
