Today’s #Coach4aday post is on STATEN ISLAND.

Even though it is one New York City’s five boroughs it has a different feel to it. It is not connected to the rest of the city by subway for one reason.

Deciding to get to Staten Island from the rest of NYC leaves you with two choices. One driving across the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge or two taking the Staten Island Ferry. The ferry is actually free but is for pedestrians only. The toll for the bridge is $10.17 each way unless you have some type of E-Z Pass.

The bridge has about 85% of the drivers utilizing some type of the reduced toll. Even with rebates the average profit for Verrazzano is over $400 million a year.

Things to Do

One of the most popular things to do is to ride the Staten Island Ferry in New York City. The ride provides stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

Here are three other ideas.

  1. Visit the Staten Island Zoo: This small zoo is home to over 1,500 animals, including kangaroos, snakes, and bears. It’s a great place to bring the family and learn about the animal kingdom. You can also participate in hands-on educational programs and feeding sessions.
  2. Take a stroll in the Greenbelt: This 2,800-acre nature preserve is located in the heart of Staten Island and offers over 35 miles of hiking trails. The Greenbelt is perfect for nature enthusiasts who want to escape the city and explore its flora and fauna. You can also visit the Greenbelt Nature Center and learn about the area’s ecology.
  3. Visit the Historic Richmond Town: This living history museum is a collection of 28 landmarked buildings and offers visitors a glimpse into Staten Island’s colonial past. You can explore the site’s historic homes, shops, and churches, and learn about the everyday life of Staten Island’s early settlers.

Staten Island is the forgotten NYC borough but if you visit you may find it memorable.
