It is hard to believe but next week the NCAA College Basketball season will be upon us. I coached my last college basketball game some twenty years ago and the season certainly starts earlier than it used to.
In the game of basketball the head coach has to identify five players to begin the game. They are known as the STARTERS. You do this by marking their number in the score book ten minutes before the game begins.
I have seen some strange starting line-up combinations during my career. Opposing coaches in games against my teams often based their lineup on different factors including injuries, match-ups, discipline problems, and believe it or not a hunch. Often times a coach playing a hunch would roll out some unconventional starting line-up that had flaws.
Basketball requires mastering fundamentals such as shooting, defense, rebounding, passing, and dribbling to mention just five. You hope the players you have on the floor can perform the fundamentals that you as a coach value.
When you are building a leadership team you need to consider having an “Inner Circle”. This “Inner Circle” are your leadership STARTERS and they need to possess not only fundamentals of your profession but some important values.
My five values to consider before someone gets entered into the leadership score book as a STARTER include:
1. Do you see POTENTIAL in them?
2. Do they bring a POSITIVE energy to you?
3. Do they support you PERSONALLY?
4. Do they PRODUCE results?
5. Are they a PROVEN leader who can develop other proven leaders?
My opinion is if they don’t possess these values you are playing a hunch and they should not get entered into the score book as a STARTER.
