I have been attempting during the pandemic to purge items from my outside storage building. I realized that I had a lot of TOOLS that were my dad’s that I have never used.
He had a number of cold chisels each with a different tip which I have never used. I am not throwing them away.
I began to wonder what might be the basic TOOLS every household should have. I am pretty sure that I have those items but I went searching for what the basics might be. Here is what I found on a pretty consistent basis as recommendations for a basic TOOL kit.
- Claw Hammer
- Adjustable Wrench
- Slip Joint Pliers or Channel Locks
- Needle Nose Pliers
- Screw Driver Set-that include phillips and flathead
- Tape Measure
- Utility Knife
- Power Drill and Drill Bits
- Level
- Various types of tape-duct tape, electrical tape, plumber tape, blue painter tape, packing tape
- Various hardware-screws, nails, nuts, and bolts
- Vice Grip Pliers
- Metal Straight Edge or T-Square
- Wire Cutters
- Putty Knife or Scraper
- Hand Saw
- LED Flashlight
Just because you have all the right TOOLS doesn’t mean they will do the job by themselves. Over the past twenty years I have probably had a few jobs that cold chisel could have solved. I forgot I had it and had never used the correct technique for it. For me that is where YouTube Videos come in handy when you have a tool. There is a technique for every TOOL that experienced people can teach us.
The same is true for our leadership TOOL kit. We can have the TOOLS but we still need techniques that proven leaders can inform us on. We all need to be constantly learning from other talented leaders how to best use leadership TOOLS.
