Today’s 30 Day Daily #Coach4adayChallenge Prompt is SPICE. Look at the list of 25 found below and state how many are in your SPICE rack or pantry.

The history of SPICE is almost as old as human civilization.

As long ago as 3500 BC the ancient Egyptians were using various spices for flavoring food. They were also used in cosmetics, and for embalming their dead.

The use of spices spread through the Middle East to the eastern Mediterranean and Europe. Eventually it was discovered that SPICE was available in China, Indonesia, India, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). They were originally transported overland by donkey or camel caravans.

For almost 5000 years, Arab middlemen controlled the SPICE trade, until European explorers discovered a sea route to India and other spice producing countries in the East.

Why Cook with Spice

Spices contribute rich flavor to food without adding any calories, fat, sugar or salt. In addition, research is showing that spices contribute to health just as much as fruits and vegetables, providing anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.

Examples that provide great nutrition and rich flavor include: cinnamon, chili peppers, oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, garlic and ginger.

When cooking time is in short supply, spices are an easy way to accentuate simply prepared whole foods such as fish, meat, chicken, vegetables, whole grains and lentils.

My SPICE Rack

I went thru the list below and identified that our SPICE rack contained 19 of the 25. Please note the numerical order of the list contains a typo. It counts #12 twice -Garlic Powder and Ginger.
