For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with the nickname “SONS OF THUNDER bestowed upon two brothers by Jesus.

Many Christians may not realize it but Jesus in the bible bestows quite a few people with nicknames. In Mark 3:17 he gives brothers James and John their new name “Sons of Thunder“.
Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
- Share that name with others
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms
July 22nd-FAQ about the Sons of Thunder
James and John were sons of Zebedee and were 2 of the original 12 apostles.
Given the Name by Jesus: Jesus gave James and John the nickname “Boanerges,” which means “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17). This name likely reflects their passionate and zealous personalities.
Request for Places of Honor: James and John, along with their mother, asked Jesus for the honor of sitting at his right and left in his glory. This request led to a teaching moment from Jesus about true greatness and servanthood (Mark 10:35-45, Matthew 20:20-28).
Witnesses to Significant Events: James and John, along with Peter, were part of Jesus’ inner circle and witnessed several key events, such as the Transfiguration (Mark 9:2-8, Matthew 17:1-9) and Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:32-42, Matthew 26:36-46).
