Rich Girl
Daryl Hall and John Oates formed Hall and Oates in 1970. They got their start in Philadelphia with Hall doing most of the lead vocals and Oates playing guitar/back-up vocals. Between 1974 and 1991 they had 33 singles reach Billboard’s Top 100. The first song to reach #1 for the duo was “Rich Girl” and that was released in 1976.
In doing research on how the song came about I located this resource that explains that Daryl Hall had a girlfriend named Sara Allen. Allen has co-written a number of songs for Hall and Oates. She had an ex-boyfriend named Victor Walker Jr.. He was from a rich family that owned fast food restaurants. The song started out about a “Rich Guy”, but Hall changed it.
