This week our host Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday for has given us the prompt to write about domesticated pets Bird/Cat/Dog/Fish/Pet. Since I have five toes pointing forward I don’t think I will commenting on any songs about PASSERINES (30 Day Vocabulary Challenge). So that leaves Cats, Dogs, Fish, and Pets.

In my past Song Lyric Sunday choices I have pretty much stayed with blues songs. I just could not resist a soul song from Marvin Gaye this week called I’ll Be DOGGONE. The song was written by Smokey Robinson, Warren Moore and Marv Tarplin. The song was written for The Temptations, who rejected the song.
“I’LL BE DOGGONE” represents three firsts for Marvin Gaye: It was his first million-selling record, his first chart-topping R&B single and his first song to be co-written by Smokey Robinson and his fellow Miracles bandmates, Pete Moore and Marv Tarplin.
In the beginning Marvin Gaye got signed by Berry Gordy Jr. for Motown Records but his early success was mostly behind-the-scenes. He was a session drummer for Motown legends such as Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, and Martha & the Vandellas.
In 1962 he got his first hit called “Hitch Hike”.
Marvin Gaye had a brand that made him popular. He was calm, tall, a smooth-skinned charmer whom the ladies found most sexy and seductive. Unfortunately like many his persona was not reality.

After his last tour in 1984, he moved into his parents’ house. There he and his father fell into a pattern of violent fights and quarrels that recalled conflicts that had haunted the family for decades. On April 1, 1984, Marvin Gaye Sr. shot and killed his son after a physical altercation; the father claimed he acted in self-defense but would later be convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Great choice for today. This is a Marvin Gaye song that I never listened to before.
