Today marks the 30th anniversary of largest snowstorm for many coastal communities in the Carolinas. Wilmington, Lumberton, Elizabethtown, and Whiteville were all impacted.

1989 Snowfall

The SNOW occurred in the days (Dec 22-24, 1989) leading up to Christmas 1989 but SNOW was still on the ground Christmas morning. Here is a recap from the WECT-TV

1989 White Christmas Snowfall Totals

My wife and I were living on West 22nd Street in Lumberton NC with three children ages 8-7-3 and we had about 10 inches of SNOW.

I still remember attempting to get our children’s Christmas gifts out of a garage on Maple St. on Christmas Eve. We had good friends Dave and Amy Vandenberg who let us hide Christmas presents in their garage. The problem was the drifting SNOW presented challenges to getting the doors opened especially without a shovel. We used our hands to scoop the SNOW out of the way.

There was no SNOW in Charlotte or Raleigh but wow did parts of Columbus, Bladen, and Pender counties get hammered.
