For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen S.
Elements 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
- Share at least one fact about that element
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are three facts about Sulphur.
Essential for Life: Sulfur is a crucial element for living organisms, as it is a component of amino acids (such as cysteine and methionine) and vitamins. These sulfur-containing compounds are vital for protein synthesis, enzyme function, and overall cellular health.
Distinct Smell in Compounds: Sulfur itself is odorless, but many of its compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), have a strong, unpleasant odor similar to rotten eggs. This is why sulfur compounds are responsible for the smell in volcanic gases, swamps, and some natural hot springs.
Used in Industry: Sulfur is widely used in industrial applications, particularly in the production of sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), one of the most important industrial chemicals. Sulfuric acid is essential in manufacturing fertilizers, refining petroleum, and processing metals. Sulfur is also used in the vulcanization of rubber and as a fungicide and pesticide in agriculture.
