Today’s contribution to the 30-Day Election Trivia Coach4aday Challenge is on RUNOFF elections.

Simply put this type of election takes place no candidate in the first election met the required threshold for victory.

FAQ about Runoff Elections

*These types of elections are only used in 10 US States. You can find the list below

The list below mainly applies to Primary Elections not the General Election. Two states that apply a 50% majority to win in a general election are Georgia and Louisiana.

Since the 1960s, runoff elections have been required for all of Georgia’s congressional, state executive, and state legislative elections in which no candidate received at least 50% of the total votes in the general election. The top two finishers in the general election then advance to the runoff where the winner is nominated to serve in the U.S. Senate.

North Carolina, a candidate must receive 30 percent of the vote plus one to win the primary if not there is a RUNOFF.
