#Reputation April 16

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

I had a golf course conversation last week with a retired friend. We were discussing career paths that are available to young people today. He told me about a nephew whose primary responsibility is REPUTATION Management.

I quizzed my friend as we made our way from tee to green on what his nephew actually did. He told me that a REPUTATION Manager attempts to control the opinion of his company’s online brand. I asked him what type of daily tasks or activities his nephew engaged in. He told me he wasn’t positive but he knew for sure that he was constantly pushing out positive content on the company’s blog and social media sites. He told me that he tweets 10-15 times a day about his company and their products.

I went searching for what other steps REPUTATION managers engage in. Here is what I found.

  1. Just like my friend told me “creating content” for social media is a big task.
  2. Communicating especially with negative reviews or comments.
  3. Self Assessment of the company as it relates to “Google Searches”
  4. Transparency-Making sure the company doesn’t hide negative facts

A few years ago I wrote about John Maxwell’s book “25 Ways To Win With People”.

One of the tips in that book is something that I believe all leaders, parents, grandparents, coaches, teachers, ministers, spouses, and friends need to remember. That tip was #6 on Maxwell’s list and it was:

“Give others a REPUTATATION to uphold”

To tap into the power of giving someone a REPUTATION to uphold you have to build a relationship with that person. When you invest your time in people you stand a pretty good chance of making them feel valued and important. When that emotion is created in someone they don’t want the REPUTATION you have given them to be tarnished.

Think about someone today that you have a relationship with that needs you to elevate their REPUTATION. Then go focus on his/her potential or their unique talents and gifts and let them know about it.

Decide to lift someone else up today. People in your family, church, business, or team achieve more than they thought possible when someone else believes in them. Be that someone.

Make it a daily habit and you will become a REPUTATION Manager.
