For February 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day RE Coach4aday Challenge”. The challenge involves utilizing a word that includes the prefix Re. Today my word is RE-EDUCATE.

Last week, I engaged in conversations with two individuals regarding aspects of Catholicism.

In the first discussion, the focus was on highlighting the imperfections within the religion and pointing out various contradictions between its doctrines and the Bible. However, I refrained from engaging in that conversation and instead chose to delve into the second encounter, which revolved around a curiosity about the process of naming a Pope. At one point in my life, I knew how that came about but I needed to re-educate myself.

Rules of the Challenge

February 21-The Pope and his name

Located a website called Catholic Answers that gave me an explanation on the process used to name a new Pope.

While there are no official criteria, a pope typically selects a name to honor a predecessor or someone they admire. For instance, John Paul II paid tribute to both Paul VI and John Paul I, while John XXIII honored his father. Additionally, a pope might opt to indicate the direction of their papacy, as seen with Pius XII, who signaled his intent to continue Pius XI’s work.

While there are no restrictions on the choice of name, there exists an unwritten custom barring popes from selecting the name Peter. This convention stems from a prudential judgment, as popes generally avoid inviting comparisons between themselves and the pope chosen by Christ himself.

The current head of the Catholic Church is Pope Francis and he choose the name to honor St. Francis of Assisi

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
