#Menu December 13

There are people that fret and have long discussions over MENU planning. A future bride may worry over what to serve at her wedding reception. A chef might be concerned about what to offer as a daily special. A hostess of a dinner party researches long hours on the perfect menu. Yet I know a bunch of lawyers that don’t do much fretting about menu planning and I will catch up with them tonight.
This evening I will get to accompany some great friends to an event for the second year in a row. The Lumberton NC dinner I am attending has occurred since 1929.
I have been invited by a good friend and Lumberton attorney Ken Ransom for about 10 years running.
I had to say no the first eight times I was asked because I was working at UNC Pembroke and it always conflicted with winter commencement. Last year one of the perks of being retired I got to join Ken and other friends and had a blast.
The Robeson County Bar Association has an event every December called the Buck Harris Dinner. William Clinton “Buck” Harris was a Superior Court Judge from Wake County that often would preside over Robeson County courts on a rotating basis. The dinner got started by NC Rep. Frank McNeill who would host a wild game social every year and eventually it merged with the Robeson County Bar Associations annual meeting.
It basically is the ballroom at Pinecrest Country Club packed with lawyers, judges, elected officials, and a few interlopers like me. Trust me every lawyer in that room has a great story and if you don’t believe me just ask one. My first year review of some of legal tales I was told appeared to be light on factual evidence.
In those 90 years the MENU has not changed for the Robeson County Bar Association. So tonight I will be dining on venison, quail, hard boiled eggs, and apple pie with a slice of cheddar cheese on top. That dessert was my dad’s all-time favorite.
Lawyers in Robeson County make a lot of decisions but not about tonight’s MENU.
