#Mandolin October 10

In October 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Kitchen Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will spotlight an appliance, utensil, or gadget found in a commercial or residential kitchen. The tools and devices used to prepare and cook food is quite extensive and this month we will take a look at both the sublime and ridiculous. My post today is focused on the MANDOLIN SLICER.

My wife, an excellent cook, recently cleared out a number of kitchen utensils and gadgets from our drawers—but one item she chose to keep was her Crofton Mandolin Slicer. It is used to cut fruits and vegetables quickly and uniformly. She can create thin, even slices for foods like potatoes, cucumbers, onions, or apples, and the one we own has settings for julienne or waffle cuts. This device saves her time and assists in getting professional-looking results for homemade potato chips & onion rings.

Here is the one we own.

Kitchen-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about an appliance, utensil, or gadget found in a Kitchen during the month of October

  1. Record something about an item found in a Kitchen. Make sure you include a description and its purpose. Try, if possible, to include a photo.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

October 10-Mandolin Slicer

Here are five popular foods to prep with a mandolin slicer:

  1. Potatoes – For making evenly thin slices for chips, scalloped potatoes, or gratins.
  2. Cucumbers – Perfect for crisp, uniform slices in salads or pickles.
  3. Onions – Ideal for paper-thin slices that cook evenly or caramelize quickly.
  4. Carrots – Great for julienne strips or thin rounds for salads and stir-fries.
  5. Apples – For consistent slices in pies, tarts, or dehydrated snacks.
