For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with LIGHT HORSE Harry.

Given that today is America’s Independence Day, I have chosen one of George Washington’s most tenacious cavalry leaders: Henry Lee III, who earned the nickname “Light Horse Harry.”

Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
  2. Share that name with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Henry Lee III was a complicated leaders with lots of flaws. He also was the father to an iconic figure in US History Robert E Lee.

“Light Horse Harry,” played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War as a skilled cavalry leader, known for his daring raids and reconnaissance missions. His leadership in the Southern Campaign, particularly in the Battle of Paulus Hook, earned him widespread acclaim and a gold medal from Congress. After the war, Lee transitioned into politics, serving as a delegate to the Continental Congress, governor of Virginia, and a member of the U.S. Congress, where he continued to influence the young nation’s development.

Henry Lee left the US for the West Indies in 1813 because he was being physical attacked and hounded for large debts he owed. He never returned. Robert E Lee was just 6 years old when his dad left the family.
