#Interested April 20

For the month of April several of us are taking on the “30-Day Conversation Coach4aday Challenge“. Today’s dialog is the importance of being INTERESTED.

At the beginning of the week, I got to listen to a number of talented leaders talk about communication, leadership, and making connections with others. Loved one concrete approach about the importance of being INTERESTED in others.

April Conversation Challenge

The overarching aim for the 30-Day Conversation Coach4aday Challenge is to engage or to repeat conversations and disseminate them. Whether these conversations hold valuable lessons, shareable insights, or are simply a mishmash of thoughts, the goal remains to foster connection and potential learning experiences for all involved.

Rules of the Challenge

First brevity is the key. Second it is not necessary to fully identify the parties involved but writing it like a script might be helpful. Third the conversations being shared can come from personal experiences, books, films, TV shows, or are imaginations.

April 20th-End of Year Evaluation

One speaker at the conference I attended this past week in Asheville shared some valuable feedback he received early in his career. His profession required him to be very competent and to some extent almost have a showman like mannerism when communicating with potential clients.

When he went in for his end of year review with his supervisor he was concerned. He was meeting the quota his organization had for him, but he could not rise to the level of the company’s top performers. He shared the conversation his mentor/supervisor and he had.

Supervisor: Well for the third year you have met our expectations. You are getting close to being in the group that qualifies for bonuses, but you are still not there yet. Do you have any questions?

Employee: Yes, I Do. What do I have to change to become one of the company’s top performers and qualify for incentive bonuses?

Supervisor: You need to stop focusing on being interesting to people and start being INTERESED in them.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
