For December 2023, several of us are participating in the “30-Day ANATOMY Coach4aday Challenge.” My choice today is the INTERCOSTALS

During this challenge, the participants select a bone or muscle in the human body, providing details about its location and physiological significance.

How the Challenge Works

  1. Identify one anatomical part of the body.
  2. Describe what its purpose is.
  3. Describe where it is located.

Identify Your Choice

My choice today is actually a group of muscles called the Intercostals.

Purpose

Our thoracic cage is made up of five groups of muscles including the Intercostals. These muscles play a crucial role in the respiratory system and are involved in the movement of the ribcage during breathing. There are three layers of intercostal muscles:

External Intercostal Muscles:

Internal Intercostal Muscles:

Innermost Intercostal Muscles:

Location

The intercostal muscles are a group of muscles located between the ribs in the thoracic region (chest).
