For December 2023, several of us are participating in the “30-Day ANATOMY Coach4aday Challenge.” My choice today is the HUMERUS.

During this challenge, the participants select a bone or muscle in the human body, providing details about its location and physiological significance.

How the Challenge Works

  1. Identify one anatomical part of the body.
  2. Describe what its purpose is.
  3. Describe where it is located.

Identify

The elbow is a hinged joint that is made of three bones one of them is the humerus.

Purpose

It plays a crucial role in the skeletal system and has four important functions:

  1. Support and Structure: The humerus provides structural support to the upper limb, contributing to the overall framework of the arm.
  2. Articulation: It forms joints at both ends, connecting with the scapula (shoulder blade) at the shoulder joint and the radius and ulna at the elbow joint. These articulations allow for a wide range of movements in the arm.
  3. Muscle Attachment: The humerus serves as an attachment site for various muscles involved in arm movement and function. Muscles such as the deltoid, biceps brachii, and triceps brachii connect to the humerus, allowing for actions like lifting, flexing, and extending the arm.
  4. Transmission of Forces: It transmits forces generated by the muscles to create movements, allowing for activities such as lifting, throwing, and reaching.

Location

The humerus is a long bone in the upper arm or forelimb that extends from the shoulder to the elbow.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
