#Habits October 18

Last week I engaged in a conversation about a topic I have written about before. the importance of HABITS.

This conversation was taking place as I was having surgery done on my arm with the doctor and nurse. Compliments about their skill and routines led to the importance of HABITS being discussed. We all agreed that many of our choices in life are the results of HABITS we have created.

My surgeon was talking about a long term goal she had to complete a marathon and I offered up opinions on theories I had learned from books and others. Concepts from Charles Duhigg the author The Power of Habit along with James Clear book Atomic HABITS were the focus. We talked about stacking of HABITS and the importance of cue, routine, and reward.

They both asked me to offer up some suggestions that I had applied in my life. We talked about 30 Day #Coach4adayChallenges I have been doing since January 2020. What I left them with was a list of ten HABITS that I do daily.

List of 10 HABITS

  1. Keep a gratitude journal-record 3 things each day your are grateful for.
My Gratitude Journal I write in each morning

2. Stay Hydrated-attempt to drink a glass of water upon waking

3. Plan out your day, week, and month. I find planning works best for the next day when done before retiring for the evening.

4. Get up early-for me that means even as a retiree that is between 5 and 5:30 a.m.

5. Get moving-one of the first things I do each morning is push-ups often followed by walking 4-5 miles playing 18 holes of golf.

6. Rest-sleep is so important-in retirement a afternoon nap is one of my daily rituals.

7. Write-I spent 45 -60 minutes a day writing

8. Daily challenge-each day I am taking on some aspect of a 30 Day Challenge-this month it learning to tie knots

9. Connect-On a daily basis reach out to a family member or friend with a call, text, or handwritten note.

10. Pray

Quote about HABITS

All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision.James Clear

If you believe you can change – if you make it a habit – the change becomes real.”Charles Duhigg

At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
