For January 2025, several of us are taking part in the 30-Day Song Lyrics Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we utilize a theme and post the song lyrics from a song that connects the two. Today my theme is on Elevator Music and my song is WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL.

Making a confession that I used Google to research top Elevator Music Songs. That took me to a top list on Allmusic. The list included some twenty plus songs, and I choose #4 on the list Winchester Cathedral.

Extremely confident that only a few can claim that they have seen in person the British group called “The New Vaudeville Band”. Winchester Cathedral was released by them in 1966. The band didn’t really exist it was just a bunch of session musicians. It is one of the few songs to ever reach high on the charts that includes a bassoon.

Song Lyrics 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines

  1. Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, and explain, if necessary, why it connects to your daily theme.
  2. Please try to include the songwriters
  3. Link to a video so people can listen to the song

The song was written by Geoff Stephens who died in December 2020. He wanted to replicate the sound of Rudy Vallee. Vallee was a singing bandleader in the 1920s and 1930s, he introduced many songs that would ultimately become pop standards, among them “Goodnight, Sweetheart”, “The Maine Stein Song”, “As Time Goes By”, “Would You Like to Take a Walk?”, “Betty Co-Ed” and his two theme songs, “Heigh-Ho, Everybody” and “I’m Just a Vagabond Lover”.
