For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a county in the US. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, and today I am selecting DUPLIN County.
Duplin County has been in existence since 1750 and was carved out of New Hanover County. The county seat is Kenansville, and the county has a population is under 50,000. From 2010 to 2020 the county saw a dip of about 15% in population according to the US Census.
A map of the county is shown in red on the map below.
Pork is big business in North Carolina and Duplin places a big role in the industry.
County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
- Share that fact along with where it is located with others

August 7th-Duplin County
One of Duplin County amazing statistics is related to hogs. Duplin County has more than 2.2 million pigs. They have more pigs than any other county in the United States according to Wikipedia. North Carolina in fact has more hogs than people according to 2010 numbers- a population of 9.2 million people and 10 million hogs statewide.
In its early history Duplin County first industry wasn’t pork it was the naval stores industry. The harvesting of rosin from the abundant longleaf pine forests to make tar, pitch and turpentine, provided barter and income for the early settlers and remained a significant part of the economy up until the late 1800’s.
