For March 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day Shout-Out Coach4aday Challenge”. Today my shoutout goes to DALE CARDER.

Throughout our life’s journey, we frequently encounter opportunities that alter our course and propel us into unforeseen directions. Such a transformative moment occurred for me in 2012 when Dale Carder, a friend of UNC Pembroke Chancellor Kyle Carter, shared an observation with him. Little did I know that observation would ultimately lead to a significant recommendation, reshaping my path in unexpected ways.

Rules of the Challenge

Organizing and participating in the 30-Day Shout Coach4aday Challenge is very simple. Below are the steps.

Here is how to participate.

  1. Identify who gets the daily Shout-Out and make sure they know you are recognizing them.
  2. Describe why you giving them a Shout-Out-what are they doing that is notable?
  3. Do this daily for 30 Days posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

March 2nd Shout-Out-Dale Carder

Dale Carder worked at the University of Central Missouri for almost 20 years.

During his time there he established a friendship with Kyle Carter who was the provost from 1998 to 2004 at UCM. In 2004 Kyle left UCM and went to Western Carolina University. In 2010 he became Chancellor at UNC Pembroke.

Carder retired from UCM in December 2011 after serving as interim chief development officer and executive director of the UCM Foundation, one of many leadership positions he held during the more than 20 years he spent on campus.

In 2012, following Dale’s retirement and transition into consulting, Chancellor Carter engaged him to contribute to various UNCP initiatives and address pertinent issues. These collaborative efforts brought Dale to campus frequently, fostering numerous discussions between him and Chancellor Carter. Among these conversations, I later discovered, was the recognition of a need for a Chief of Staff with strong connections to both the community and the university.

Despite Dale’s limited interaction with me, he confidently suggested to Chancellor Carter that I would excel in this position. Trusting his friend’s judgment, Chancellor Carter took a professional leap of faith on a relative newcomer, appointing me to serve as Chief of Staff for almost six years under two different chancellors. This opportunity proved to be the pinnacle of my professional journey.

Dale Carder this shout out is for you-thanks for influencing Kyle-his decision changed my life.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
