#Criticism October 8

Received some feedback that one of the participants in this month’s 30 Day Knot Tying #Coach4aday Challenge was the subject of CRITICISM. The rationale given to them by the critic was they were wasting their time with trivial pursuits.

Knots are sometimes used to tie things down. For many people when they deliver a mean spirited CRITICISM their sole intent is to tie someone up emotionally. How we respond is the key. Just like knot tying requires specific techniques so does responding to critical statements

Responding to Criticism

  1. Listen before speaking
  2. Ask Questions-In this case “I hear you say that learning to tie knots is trivial -Why?
  3. Focus on facts not their opinion or even more importantly your opinion.
  4. Don’t communicate via text, social media, or email-do it face to face if possible
  5. Get advice from trusted family member of friend before responding if possible
  6. Reflect and try to understand where this CRITICISM came from

Advice on giving Criticism

  1. Does it need to be said?
  2. Does it need to be said, by me?
  3. Does it need to be said, by me, right now?

Close the post with two quotes:

When we judge or criticize another person, it says nothing about that person; it merely says something about our own need to be critical.”Unknown

“Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you. Love me and I may be forced to love you.”
– William Arthur Ward

Closing with this advice, don’t let CRITICISM tie you up emotionally.
