For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a COUNTY. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, but it could be any US State.

First thing is not every US State has a political subdivision called a county. For instance, Louisiana calls them Parishes and in Alaska they are called Boroughs. In total, the 50 states consist of 3,007 counties. In addition to those 3,007 there are 237 county equivalents which include the District of Columbia, the parishes of Louisiana, and boroughs of Alaska.

With all of those choices there should be no shortage of what county to choose.

County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

1. Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
2. Share that fact along with where it is located with others
3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

August 1st-Bladen County

For this challenge I am going to feature a different North Carolina County each day starting with Bladen County. For those not from the Tar Heel State we currently have 100. The state has not always had 100 and if you want to see a list of every NC County since 1664 go to this link.

In North Carolina you can try to talk about your home county being unique and being able to stand out in the crowd. The fact for the majority of counties in North Carolina is their history is tied to Bladen County. Of the state’s 100 counties 55 at one time were part of Bladen County.

Bladen County is home to many Carolina Bays. Carolina Bays are oval-shaped depressions that can be hundreds of feet or miles wide and between 15 to 50 feet deep. Bladen County has more of these bays than any other county in the state. Scientists dispute the reason for these Carolina Bays but many hold to the belief that meteorite showers caused these indentations.

One Bladen County native distinguished himself by going into space. Curtis Brown an astronaut from Elizabethtown, North Carolina, led the 1998 Space Shuttle Discovery mission that took the legendary John Glenn back into space.
