For December 2023, several of us are participating in the “30-Day ANATOMY Coach4aday Challenge.” My choice today is the CLAVICLE
During this challenge, the participants select a bone or muscle in the human body, providing details about its location and physiological significance.
How the Challenge Works
- Identify one anatomical part of the body.
- Describe what its purpose is.
- Describe where it is located.

Identify Your Choice
To date I have only broken one bone in my body and that was my left clavicle. It happened my last week in college, and I had to graduate with my arm in a sling. This bone is also referred to as a collarbone.
Purpose
The clavicle has three main functions:
Attaches the upper limb to the trunk as part of the ‘shoulder girdle’.
- Protects the underlying neurovascular structures supplying the upper limb.
- Transmits force from the upper limb to the axial skeleton.
Location
Each clavicle extends between the sternum and the scapula.
