#Anniversary June 8

Today my wife and I have been married 40 years. It is an ANNIVERSARY milestone that we thought we could celebrate with travel. The pandemic took that option away from us. We pray and are optimistic we will travel together another time. In lieu of travel it will be dinner together at home dining on crab legs.

We have come a long way in 40 years. Here is the two of us walking out of the church as a married couple on June 8, 1980.

A marriage is much more than the story about how you met. My wife and I have a pretty good story that I will spare you from reading. Even though we believe it is a great story that is not enough to stay married for more than half your life. To do that you need substance and commitment. Two things my wife truly brings to our partnership.

So for what it is worth this is my take on how you get to celebrate ANNIVERSARIES that have zeros in them.

  • Love is a verb, not a noun-Love requires action-it is not a feeling.
  • Marriage is hard work-there will be times when one partner does 100% of a particular responsibility- it is not all 50/50.
  • You have to find time for the two of you-We still had date night after 40 years of marriage until COVID 19 came into our world. When it leaves we will jump back to it. We also have five children so it was not easy to do each week during our first 20 years of being married-both of us are grateful for friends like Marilyn Prevatte and others, who allowed us to get away. Marilyn became a second mom to the Kenneys. Marilyn is shown below in red sweater with my wife and I.

  • Compromise-you don’t need to give up your entire identity but you need give and not just take in the relationship.
  • Friendship-make your spouse your best friend
  • Communicate-Each person in a marriage has needs and feelings they have to be shared with one another, the relationship doesn’t stand much of a chance long-term if you don’t talk.
  • Having a partner that is reliable, responsible, and honest.

I have been married for over half my life. It has been the best half of my life thanks to my wife, best friend, and soul mate Mira Gibson Kenney. Happy ANNIVERSARY!
