July 28th Curiosity Question
Why are there so many Personal Injury Ads on TV?
If you watch television in the Florence-Myrtle Beach SC-Lumberton NC market, you have been exposed to a plethora of ads. These pitches are dominated by personal injury attorneys.
Here is a rundown of commercials or mentions of attorneys I viewed in one day on various SC TV Channels. I may be missing a few.
July 28th Answer
TV ads by Personal Injury Attorneys is big business. Spending on legal service ads on television hit $1.2 billion from January to November 2022, according to data from Kantar.
Why is it that during every commercial break, we come across someone asking us if we’ve been hurt in a car crash, injured on the job, or drank water at Camp Lejeune?
The answer involves volume, competition, and targeting or focused advertising.
First the volume. The majority of personal injury lawyers operate on a contingency fee basis, meaning they receive payment only if they successfully negotiate a settlement for their client or win the case at trial. However, it’s worth noting that less than 1% of all cases actually go to trial. In such instances, the lawyer’s fee typically ranges from 33% to 40% of the total amount awarded as compensation. From a business model it’s a numbers game. To generate the required volume they need to be in the advertising game.
Second Competition-The level of competition can vary depending on the specific location, as certain areas may have a higher demand for personal injury services due to population density or other factors. Some estimates have the greater Myrtle Beach area experiencing 19 million visitors a year.
Focused Ads-During daytime TV viewing, you’ll likely notice an abundance of law firm commercials. The rationale is that people who have been injured in a car crash or hurt at work are watching from home or in a hospital during the day
