November 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Idiom Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will identify a ‘Saying or Expression” and explore what its origins are. For Day 7 we explore the expression “ABOVE BOARD”

Many of the expressions we use every day have fascinating histories, cultural connections, and lessons that remain relevant today. The goal of this challenge is to explore those.

If you play any type of card game, you may already be familiar with the origin of “Above Board.” Simply put, players are expected to keep their hands where everyone can see them—on the table or above the board. Over time, the expression has evolved into a broader reference to honesty, integrity, and transparency. Being above board means having nothing to hide.
