There are many things that make me happy about CHRISTMAS.
In our family the days after Thanksgiving are the traditional time for us to go purchase a CHRISTMAS Tree. We live in a home built in 1910 with 11 foot ceilings. Tall ceilings equates to a tall tree. Specifically we want a Fraser Fir grown in North Carolina. A large means a big project to get it in the house and set up. Also you have to decorate a large tree which is no small feat.
North Carolina has approximately 1,300 growers producing Fraser Fir Christmas trees on an estimated 40,000 acres.
Fraser fir represents over 98% of all species grown in North Carolina.
Fraser fir is grown in the far Western North Carolina counties which include Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga and Yancey.
The North Carolina Christmas Tree Industry is ranked second in the nation in number of trees harvested and cash receipts.
North Carolina produces over 19% of the Real Christmas Trees in the U.S.
It takes two strong young men usually from Greenstate Landscaping to get our 11 foot tree in place. They place the tree in the corner of a room in front of our home and place it on a 4′ by 4’piece of 3/4″ plywood. Each corner of the plywood has a an eye bolt for a chain to secure the tree from toppling over. You can see the eye bolts and chain in the photo below.
All the pieces of getting a CHRISTMAS tree in the house are part of the holidays for our family. It usually takes a couple of weeks from purchase to completely decorated but each step helps create joy and happiness.
