I have about a dozen routes from my home when I want to go for a walk or run. One of them includes weaving my way thru Meadowbrook CEMETERY. I realize some may view a graveyard visit as MACABRE (30 Day Vocabulary Challenge) but that is not my motivation.

There are some obvious reasons for choosing a CEMETERY for exercise and one is very little traffic. I find a walk or jog always quite and peaceful. Yet for me there are other reasons. One I get to reflect on the names I pass by. I often go past the headstones of people I knew.

The other reason is trying to demystify the symbols on many headstones. A walk thru Meadowbrook will reveal headstones dating back to the 1800’s. Over the centuries the symbols on headstones has changed. I found a fantastic website called The CEMETERY Club and a great article on Graveyard Symbolism

The oldest headstone in North Carolina is reportedly in Salisbury NC at the Old English CEMETERY.
