Sometimes walking 18 holes on the golf course you receive advice, suggestions, or tips on a wide variety of topics from your playing partners. This happened three weeks ago when Carey Read told me about a DILEMMA in our world.

He encouraged me to take 90 minutes and watch a documentary on Netflix called The Social DILEMMA. He told me he was almost sure anyone watching it would reflect on the film’s message. Carey was correct, I viewed the film and it made me think about the DILEMMA of Social Media.

This film explains the business model of the Internet’s most popular platforms. The core of that model is social media tracks our online behavior in order to sell targeted ads. Those ads and other techniques are attempting to finds ways to keep us engaged longer on our devices.

I am not going to attempt to influence your point of view before you watch the film. I will say that the line-up on the film all seemed extremely knowledgeable about Social Media business models.

If you have ever wondered how a search for a product always seems to produce ads on that product, curious about the impact of social media on young people, and how psychology is being used to drive consumer behavior watch The Social DILEMMA.

Here is the trailer for the film
