The rainy days early last week gave me some time to compile some new playlists on Spotify. I have close to 100 hundred collection of songs but I was somewhat surprised I had never done one for Led ZEPPLIN.
If you grew up in the 70’s there was a song that often got played at closing time in clubs and bars by ZEPPLIN called Stairway to Heaven. When that song was done you did not have to go home but you had to leave.
Stairway to Heaven shows up on just about any list of the greatest rock songs.
The song has three sections, each one progressively increasing in tempo and volume. I think that uniqueness and its length contributed to its iconic place in music history.
Led ZEPPLIN consisted of lead guitarist Jimmy Page, vocals Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and bass guitar John Paul Jones. They actually started out as the New Yardbirds. Apparently some disparaging remarks from fellow British musicians along the lines of “the New Yardbirds would sink like a Lead ZEPPLIN” caused the group to change their name to Led ZEPPLIN.
As I compiled the playlist I was moved by a number of the lyrics in their songs I really enjoyed. I jotted down some of what I consider there best ones.
Song-Going to California
Took my chances on a big jet plane
Never let them tell you that they’re all the same
The sea was red and the sky was grey
Wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today
Song -Over The Hills and Far Away
Many have I loved, and many times been bitten
Many times I’ve gazed along the open road
Many times I’ve lied, and many times I’ve listened
Many times I’ve wondered how much there is to know
Many dreams come true, and some have silver linings
I live for my dream, and a pocket full of gold
Mellow is the man who knows what he’s been missing
Many, many men can’t see the open road
Song-Ten Years After
Then as it was, then again it will be
An’ though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea
I will end the post with the ZEPPLIN video “Stairway to Heaven”. After it’s finished playing you don’t have to get off the internet but you can’t stay here.
