August 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Plugged in Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we will feature an item from home or office that requires being plugged into a source of electricity to operate. We will reflect on how it makes life easier. For Day 18 it is the WAFFLE IRON.

As each day of this challenge progresses, I am beginning to notice a pattern. Electricity didn’t invent the activity or chore; it simply made it much more convenient. The electric waffle iron is another great example of how electricity transformed an everyday task without changing what we were actually doing.

Day 18-Waffle Iron

Prior to homes being wired and having power American kitchens relied on stove tops fueled by wood. In 1869 Cornelius Swartwout received a patent to improve a hinged waffle iron that could be used on top of cooktop.

The first electric waffle irons appeared in the early 20th century, after household electricity and electric heating elements became practical. By the 1920s and 1930s, manufacturers were producing electric waffle irons for home kitchens. Companies such as General Electric, Westinghouse, and Toastmaster helped turn the waffle iron into a convenient household electrical appliance.

Found a post called “Waffling Around” located on The Antique Almanac That article really provides a great timeline.
