#Suck March 15

March 2026 marks the 75th consecutive month that Jeff Neelon, Jaclyn Donovan, and I have completed a 30-Day Coach4aday Challenge. For this milestone month, we’ve chosen to focus on teaching. Each day for 30 days, we will share one lesson, principle, or insight gained from the previous 74 challenges—calling it the 30-Day Coach4aday Teach It Challenge. For each of us we believe that our own personal growth increases when we share it. Today it is a lesson on when life serves up SUCK what can it teach us.

In the middle of 2020, when COVID was in full force, I encountered more than one person who described life as if it were constantly serving up a steady dose of “suck.” One simple way to define it as very uncomfortable and not pleasant.
The changes we all made in 2020 in both our personal and professional lives were uncomfortable. When we get in that space it does provide an opportunity comfort cannot offer.
“Teach It” 30 Day Challenge Guidelines
In past challenges, we invited others to join us, though participation has been limited. This month, the three of us will return to January 2020—the very beginning—and move forward to the present, reflecting along the way and sharing a life lesson or insight from any month with one another.
Here is how we will do it.
- Identify the principle, insight, or lesson from a previous 30-Day Challenge-identify the Challenge also.
- Teach that lesson to each of us.
- Share the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge
Day 15-Embracing the Suck
So, if another word for suck is being uncomfortable what did the 2020 pandemic offer up to all of us. When you get in that uncomfortable space many people will utilize nostalgia as their sole source of therapeutic relief. Nostalgia is that feeling we dial up when we encounter change.
Most of us understand that physical growth comes from spending time in an uncomfortable training zone. Strength, flexibility, and speed rarely improve without pushing through the strain and challenge that come with rigorous exercise. The US Marines have a mantra that says, “Embrace the Suck“.
Personally, I offer up 30-Day Challenges as something that I start out doing that I just am not very good at especially on Day 1. Another way of looking at the concept of things that suck is leaving our own personal comfort zones. Most of these monthly challenges involve leaving my comfort zone.
Seth Godin has a great quote
“Discomfort brings engagement and change. Discomfort means you’re doing something that others were unlikely to do, because they’re hiding out in the comfortable zone.”
We have to remember if we just stay nostalgic and remain in our comfort zone, there is no growth.
