In May 2025, many of us have decided to participate in the 30-Day Golf Coach4aday Challenge. Each day the goal is to share something about a particular golf course, golf equipment, or to actually get on the course and play a few holes. Golf is the only sport where you can be furious, humbled, and ecstatic—all in the span of one hole, and still call it “relaxing.” It’s a game where you are cajoling and chasing a tiny ball into a gopher hole. For many it becomes a lifelong obsession and an excuse to buy outrageous pants and the latest driver.

Today my golf observation is on a DEW SWEEPER.

This challenge will not be for everybody but there are plenty that enjoy the game despite not being anywhere close to playing at a high level. That includes me.

Golf 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to getting out on the golf course—but if that’s not in the cards, share a story about a favorite course or a piece of gear you love (or love to hate).

  1. Record something about your day on the course or talk about a golf course or piece of equipment.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Day 10-Dew Sweeper

Over the past two weeks I have fielded a few curiosity questions about what actually a Dew Sweeper is. Simply put it is slang for people who walk playing golf really early in the morning. Often their round starts way before the pro shop opens.

My golfing buddies refer to our group as the “Lumberton Dew Sweepers” see picture above.

We have had a number of people play with us over the years, but the distinction of founder goes to Knocky Thorndyke. Since his retirement a quarter of century ago he plays golf always ever day often at sunrise. It is not uncommon for him to be shooting below his age multiple times a week.

The majority of group is retired and includes dentists, surgeons, college professors, CPA, and college coaches.

Most of have an instrument in our golf bag that is made out of PVC and is T-shaped. That homemade tool is our actual dew sweeper. When we get on the putting green we can wipe away the dew to give our putts somewhat of a dry surface.

The photo below shows the T shaped tool in a golf bag.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
