For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the World Series. Today I am focusing on games that had WEATHER EXTREMES.
Two games in World Series history stand out on opposite ends of baseball weather extremes. One took place in Game 4 of 1997 World Series and the other was in Game 1 of 2017 World Series.
World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

October 22nd-Weather Extremes
The MLB Baseball Season covers 7 months from April to October. That time frame for regular season games can present a wide variety of climate conditions. World Series games take place in October and two games hold the record for Coldest and Hottest games.
Coldest Game
Here are three key facts about the coldest World Series game in history, which took place during the 1997 World Series:
- Coldest Temperature: The coldest game in World Series history occurred during Game 4 of the 1997 World Series between the Cleveland Indians and the Florida Marlins. The game was played on October 22, 1997, at Jacobs Field (now Progressive Field) in Cleveland. The temperature at the start of the game was 38°F (3°C), and it dipped even lower as the game progressed, with the wind chill making it feel even colder.
- Indians’ Victory: Despite the frigid conditions, the Cleveland Indians won the game 10-3, evening the series at two games apiece. Cleveland’s offense came alive in the cold weather, with contributions from key players like David Justice and Matt Williams, helping the Indians overcome the Florida Marlins.
Hottest Game
Here are some key facts about the hottest World Series game, which took place during the 2017 World Series:
- Record-Breaking Temperature: Game 1 of the 2017 World Series, played on October 24, 2017, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, set the record for the hottest World Series game in history. The temperature at the start of the game was a scorching 103°F (39.4°C), making it the hottest ever recorded for a World Series game.
- Dodgers’ Victory: Despite the extreme heat, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Houston Astros 3-1. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw was dominant, striking out 11 Astros over seven innings, and Justin Turner hit a two-run homer in the 6th inning, which proved to be the game-winner.
