For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the WORLD SERIES. Today I am focusing on the 1903 event.

At the end of the 19th century, there were two professional baseball leagues the American and National. To put it mildly they had issues and refused to play each other so each league declared themselves champions. That all changed in 1903 when the two leagues put aside their disdain for each other and agreed to have their champions pair off against each other. That event has been called the World Series.

October 1st-1903

The 1903 World Series was the first-ever modern championship series in Major League Baseball (MLB), and it holds a special place in sports history. Here are some interesting facts about it:

1. First Modern World Series: The 1903 World Series was the first official championship series played between the champions of the National League (NL) and the newly formed American League (AL). It was a best-of-nine series between the Pittsburgh Pirates (NL) and the Boston Americans (now the Red Sox) of the AL.
2. Boston Americans Won: The Boston Americans won the series 5 games to 3, marking the first-ever World Series championship victory. Boston came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the next four consecutive games, clinching the title. Pitcher Cy Young, one of baseball’s all-time greats, played a significant role in Boston’s victory.
3. Attendance and Prize Money: The games drew strong attendance, with more than 100,000 fans attending the series in total. Players from the winning team, the Boston Americans, received $1,182 each, while players from the losing Pittsburgh Pirates team earned $1,316, as the league’s revenue-sharing rules resulted in slightly more earnings for the losing team.
