For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen Cs

Here are three facts about Cesium.

Highly Reactive Alkali Metal: Cesium is one of the most reactive alkali metals, particularly with water. It reacts explosively even with cold water, producing heat, hydrogen gas, and cesium hydroxide. Cesium is so reactive that it must be stored in inert environments like mineral oil to prevent it from reacting with moisture in the air.

Used in Atomic Clocks: Cesium is crucial for the most accurate atomic clocks, known as cesium atomic clocks. These clocks use the vibrations of cesium atoms to measure time with incredible precision, allowing timekeeping accurate to within a few billionths of a second. This level of precision is used in GPS systems, telecommunications, and scientific research.

Soft, Gold-Colored Metal: Cesium is a soft, silvery-gold metal at room temperature. It’s one of the few metals that are liquid at or near room temperature, with a melting point of only 28.5°C (83.3°F). Its golden color makes it stand out among the other alkali metals, which are usually silvery.
