For the month of August 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a county in the US. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, and today I am selecting CRAVEN County.

Since 1739 Craven County has had county status. Its county seat is New Bern which is a pretty neat town that has gone under some nice renovations over the past 15 years. New Bern was once the Capitol of North Carolina and one of its historic places to visit is Tryon Palace.

The map of Craven is found below in blue.

County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
  2. Share that fact along with where it is located with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

August 8th-Facts about Craven County

People have discovered New Bern and Craven County as a tourist destination. It has history and leaders have helped lead a renaissance to showcasing culture and natural assets.

Here are three interesting things about the county.

Historic New Bern: Craven County is home to New Bern, North Carolina’s second-oldest town, founded in 1710.

Birthplace of Pepsi-Cola: Craven County boasts a unique claim to fame as the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. In 1893, Caleb Bradham, a local pharmacist in New Bern, created “Brad’s Drink,” which was later renamed Pepsi-Cola. The original pharmacy where Pepsi was invented still stands and is now a museum dedicated to the history of the beverage.

Coastal Recreation and Wildlife: Craven County offers diverse recreational opportunities due to its coastal location. It is bordered by the Neuse and Trent rivers, providing excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, and water sports. Additionally, parts of the Croatan National Forest lie within the county, offering hiking, camping, and wildlife observation.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
