For the month of August 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a county in the US. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, and today I am selecting JACKSON County.

Today is my oldest son’s birthday, and he was born in Sylva, NC, the county seat of Jackson County. As those familiar with North Carolina history would know, Jackson County is named after President Andrew Jackson and was established in 1851 from portions of Haywood and Macon Counties. Interestingly, 21 states have a county named in his honor.

Below is a map showing the county in blue.

County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
  2. Share that fact along with where it is located with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

August 3rd-Jackson County

If you are inclined to travel to the mountains of Western North Carolina Jackson County is very close to a number of interesting possibilities. One thing to add to your itinerary is to climb the 107 steps to the Jackson County Courthouse. It just might be the prettiest courthouse in the entire state of NC.

Here is a picture of me standing in front of the courthouse in September 2023.

Other attractions in Jackson County include:

Home to Western Carolina University: Jackson County is home to Western Carolina University (WCU), located in Cullowhee.

Great Smoky Mountains Proximity: Jackson County is situated near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering residents and visitors access to stunning natural landscapes, outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping, and breathtaking scenic views.

Rich Cherokee Heritage: The county has a rich Native American history, being part of the ancestral lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Visitors can explore cultural sites and learn about the Cherokee heritage, including visiting the nearby town of Cherokee, which features museums, cultural centers, and historical attractions.

Blue Ridge Parkway Jackson County does not have any park of this road in the county, but it is still close to the Parkway, making it accessible for residents and visitors to enjoy the scenic drives and attractions it offers.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
