For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with a criminal called “The BIRDMAN”.
Sometimes Hollywood makes a movie out of someone life and they take liberties with the facts. That was the case with the life of Robert Stroud (1890-1963) who was called the Birdman of Alcatraz. Stroud was a convicted murderer who never repented and lived much of his 52 years in prison in solitary confinement.
Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
- Share that name with others
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms
July 14th-Birdman
Stroud the Birdman of Alcatraz became renowned for his work with canaries while serving a prison sentence at Leavenworth Penitentiary. That continued when in 1942 he was transferred to Alcatraz.
Despite his confinement, Stroud bred and studied canaries, becoming an expert in avian diseases and authoring two significant books on the subject. His dedication to ornithology earned him respect in the scientific community, even though he conducted his research under the constraints of imprisonment.
Burt Lancaster played Stroud in the 1962 movie called The Birdman of Alcatraz. Stroud never got to see the film and Lancaster was nominated for an Academy Award.
