For the month of May 2024 several of us are taking on the 30-Day Astronomy Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to learn something about ASTRONOMY each day.

This will begin the 53rd consecutive 30-Day Challenge and the decision was to learn about a very vast subject in daily bite size pieces.

Studying astronomy daily offers a window into the vastness of the cosmos, revealing the beauty and complexity of celestial phenomena. Observing the stars and planets can teach us humility when learn about our small place in the universe. Personally I am hoping for a daily sense of wonder learning about what we all are part of.

Astronomy Challenge Suggested Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in May learn something new about our universe either by reading or observation.
  2. Share that knowledge with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Day 1-Astronomy Numbers and Facts

Exploring the numerical scales of astronomy is profoundly humbling. Here’s a fundamental hierarchy in studying this science:

  1. Solar System -Our solar system consists of eight planets (including the Earth), their moons, asteroids, comets, and dwarf planets like Pluto, We have one star in our solar system and it is the sun.
  2. Our Solar System is part of the a galaxy called the Milky Way. The Milky Way is estimated to have between 100-400 billion stars. One of them is our sun. In addition to stars there may be a billion planets in this galaxy including our planet called earth.
  3. The Milky Way Galaxy is part of the Universe.
  4. Estimates of the number of galaxies in the observable universe vary, but current estimates suggest there are around 100 billion to 200 billion galaxies.

Those numbers are staggering.
