Today contribution to the 30-Day Letter Writing Coach4aday Challenge is on a 1964 PREDICTION.
The challenge involves composing a letter to yourself when you were an earlier age. The goal is to focus on a value, habit, or choice that needs to be adopted or made.
The letter today is not really about a value, habit, or choice but more about a father’s insight into making a PREDICTION on a change in technology fifty years before it occurred. My dad in 1964 told my brother Pat and I something that seemed outlandish and Orson Wells like leaving the World’s Fair in New York City. Today’s letter covers that clairvoyant moment.
Day 8-Letter about the future
Summer 1964
Dear 11-Year-Old Dan:
Today something unusual is going to happen to you. Your dad is going to take both you and your brother to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City. That is going to involve your father traveling to a place that he really despises. Growing up in Northern NJ despite its close proximity to “The Big Apple” he just doesn’t have much love for the crowds and the need to navigate traffic and mass transit. The three of you will be part of 51 million people who will attend before it closes in 1965. At this event a PREDICTION will come from your dad that you doubt but it will come to fruition.
The World’s Fair held over 140 pavilions and 110 restaurants. Those buildings represented 80 nations, 45 corporations, and 24 US States. It will be at one of those corporate locations that your dad will make a bold prediction.
When you leave the Bell System Pavilion the conversation will center on all things a popular comic strip called Dick Tracy that runs in many newspapers. Tracy was a police detective that could use his wristwatch as two-way communication back to police headquarters.
Your father will tell your brother and you today that in your lifetime that Dick Tracy’s watch will become a reality.
In 2014 Apple will announce that they have created a device they will call the Apple Watch. It will become available for purchase in 2015. This communication tool can be used to make phone calls.
1964 to 2014 is fifty years away but your dad’s look into the future will be confirmed.
Grown Up Dan
