I was reflecting on what was invented in 1921 that is still around today.

Here is a small list.

Band-Aid: The convenient dressing with adhesive tape was invented by Earle Dickson in 1921.

Drive-in restaurant: The first drive-in restaurant was Kirby’s Pig Stand, which opened in Dallas, Texas, in 1921. Drive in restaurants are everywhere today but unfortunately Kirby’s closed in 2006

Lie Detector: The lie detector, the modern polygraph system that sensed reactions that helped to determine whether or not a person was lying, was invented by John A. Larson in 1921

In 1921 the first Baseball World Series was broadcast on radio. One hundred years later you can just about watch any sporting event live streamed including youth sports.

Just like some inventions that have survived 100 years we still have issues in the country that have not been solved.

In 1921 Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act establishing national quotas on immigration. In 2021 we still have debate on that topic.

The other takeaway is that 100 years ago in 1921 the country worked its way out of WWI, the Spanish Flu, and economic depression to create a decade described as the “Roaring 20’s”. Economic historians often debate that the factors that made the decade so profitable were less of an anomaly but more a return to normalcy.

If 1921 can teach us anything it is the power of being appreciative. My hope is 100 years later in 2021 we revisit the Life Lesson of the Roaring 20’s and begin our journey into the next decade with optimism and enthuiasism.
