For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the World Series. Today I am focusing on the 12 times the NY Yankees and LA Dodgers have met in the event.
The 2024 World series which got underway on October 25, 2024, marks the 12th time the Yankees and Dodgers have faced off against each other in the Fall Classic. Encourage you to read the article written by Houston Mitchell of the LA Times that highlights the previous 11 matchups and what me might expect in number 12. With the Dodgers up 2-0 in 2024 it is good to remember in 1963 they did sweep the Yankees, but we have more games to play in this twelfth all-time meeting.
World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines
- Each day in October 2024 write about the World Series
- Share at least one fact about the event or the participants.
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms
October 27th-12
Here are three magic moments from previous World Series games involving the Yankees and Dodgers
Bill Bevens’ Almost No-Hitter (1947 World Series, Game 4):
- In Game 4 of the 1947 World Series, Yankees pitcher Bill Bevens was one out away from throwing the first no-hitter in World Series history against the Brooklyn Dodgers. However, with two outs in the ninth inning, Cookie Lavagetto of the Dodgers hit a two-run double, breaking up the no-hitter and giving the Dodgers a dramatic 3-2 victory.
2. Reggie Jackson’s Three Home Runs (1977 World Series, Game 6):
- In Game 6 of the 1977 World Series, Yankees slugger Reggie Jackson hit three home runs on three consecutive pitches off three different Dodgers pitchers, cementing his nickname “Mr. October.” Jackson’s performance led the Yankees to an 8-4 victory over the Dodgers, securing the Yankees’ first World Series title in 15 years.
3. Sandy Koufax’s Game 7 Shutout (1965 World Series, Game 7):
- In the decisive Game 7 of the 1965 World Series, Sandy Koufax pitched a brilliant complete-game shutout for the Dodgers against the Yankees, leading the Dodgers to a 2-0 victory and their second World Series title in Los Angeles. Koufax, pitching on just two days’ rest, struck out 10 batters, solidifying his place as one of the greatest pitchers in World Series history.
