For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen Zn.

Zn is the symbol for Zinc.

30-Day Elements Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
  2. Share at least one fact about that element
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are three facts about Zinc.

Essential for Human Health: Zinc is an essential trace element for humans, playing a key role in immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, and cell division. It is also vital for proper growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. Zinc deficiency can lead to impaired immune responses and slower healing.

Used in Galvanization: One of the most common uses of zinc is in the galvanization process, where a thin layer of zinc is applied to iron or steel to prevent rusting. The zinc coating protects the underlying metal from corrosion by acting as a barrier and sacrificing itself to oxidation before the iron or steel does.

Present in Alloys and Batteries: Zinc is a key component in many alloys, such as brass (a mixture of zinc and copper). It is also widely used in batteries, particularly zinc-carbon and zinc-air batteries, which power devices ranging from flashlights to hearing aids.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
