For the month of August 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a county in the US. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, and today I am selecting YANCEY County.

Yancey County was formed in 1833 from Buncombe and Burke Counties. Its county seat is Burnsville, NC and a map outlined below in red shows Yancey County.

In the early 1900s, the railroad transformed Yancey economy from an agricultural-based town into a mining community.  The Black Mountain Railroad, reaching Yancey in 1911, allowed for the convenient transportation of mica.

County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
  2. Share that fact along with where it is located with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are some things to know about the county.

Mount Mitchell: The county is home to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in the eastern United States, standing at 6,684 feet. Located within Mount Mitchell State Park, the mountain is a popular destination for hiking and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

Crafts and Arts: Yancey County has a strong tradition of arts and crafts, particularly in the town of Burnsville. The area is known for its vibrant arts community, including the internationally recognized Penland School of Craft.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
