n October 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Kitchen Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will spotlight an appliance, utensil, or gadget found in a commercial or residential kitchen. The tools and devices used to prepare and cook food is quite extensive and this month we will take a look at both the sublime and ridiculous. My post today is focused on a WOODEN SPOON.

Not every utensil in the kitchen is used for its intended purpose. Let’s take the wooden spoon which is a perfect and versatile kitchen tool used for stirring soups, sauces, and stews without scratching cookware. When you are parents to five children with the oldest three just five years apart there is occasional moments of discipline and punishment. Sometimes it required finding something that could be used for light paddling and in our home that often meant the wooden spoon. One of my sons later in life affectionally described a wooden spoon as a “Weapon of Ass Destruction” a clever play on the military acronym WMD.

Here is the one we currently have in our kitchen (that was not used for paddling), and we are probably ready for an upgrade.

Kitchen-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about an appliance, utensil, or gadget found in a Kitchen during the month of October

  1. Record something about an item found in a Kitchen. Make sure you include a description and its purpose. Try, if possible, to include a photo.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

October 14-Wooden Spoon

One clever hack I have learned about this utensil is its ability to prevent a pot of boiling water from spilling over.

Here are five other uses in the kitchen:

  1. Stirring soups and sauces – Perfect for evenly mixing ingredients without scratching nonstick or metal cookware.
  2. Mixing batters or doughs – Strong enough to handle thick mixtures that might strain a metal spoon.
  3. Sautéing vegetables or meats – Great for stirring ingredients in a hot pan since the handle stays cool.
  4. Scraping up browned bits – Gentle enough to lift flavorful bits from the bottom of pans without damage.
  5. Tossing salads or pasta – Ideal for mixing delicate ingredients without bruising or tearing them.
