Today for the 30-Day Movie Coach4aday Challenge I watched a movie on VOLCANO.

Today’s movie is titled The Volcano: Rescue From Whakaari which I watched on Netflix. The film details the events of a devastating eruption in New Zealand. It takes place in a region called Whakaari – a popular tourist destination also known as the White Island – on 9 December 2019, which left 22 dead.

Synopsis

The Volcano debuted on Netflix on December 16, 2022 and is filled with tragedy and heroics. The island where the eruption took place is located about 30 miles off the coast of Whakatane.

The day of the eruption two tourist boats and a helicopter had visited White Island. Prior to the eruption one of the two boats (Phoenix) had left the island and were about 15 minutes out when the mountain exploded. After the blast of ash and steam there was a frantic effort to rescue those that were still there.

Three helicopters left New Zealand and were able to locate 12 survivors. The tourist boat Phoenix came back to shore and were able to get another large group. Eight people died on the island with two bodies never located. Fourteen people that were rescued eventually died from their burns.

Lesson

This film demonstrates that every day truly is a gift. What turned out to be a beautiful day turned quickly into a natural disaster. When times are difficult it is amazing the power of people helping others and the human spirit.
